He is not a Tame Lion

I recently gave a talk to a youth group at a Narnia themed event. Here is a summary of the talk.
He is not a Tame Lion
Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you.

The reason so many people do not follow Jesus is because their vision of Him is too small. We have made God in our own image and we wonder why we are not interested. God cannot be tamed and He is not safe! But He is good. He’s the King.

He is Great

The estimated diameter of the universe is 93 billion light years.
  • The speed of light is roughly 300 000 km/s. Travelling at this speed it would take 1.3 seconds to travel to the moon.
  • In 1 light year you could travel 10 trillion kilometres.
    • A million seconds is 12 days.
    • A billion seconds is 31 years.
    • A trillion seconds is 31,688 years.
God is so great we can't even understand how great He is. In the same way these numbers stagger our mind, so should God's greatness. His greatness is beyond comprehension.

There are approximately 37.2 trillion cells in the average human body. In each cell there is a DNA molecule which if it were stretched out would be 2 meters in length. All of these cells are measured in micrometres. No matter where we look God's incredible awesomeness is on display.

God spoke the world into existence. The molecules could not resist His command and came into being. He did not struggle or toil to do this, He simply spoke.
For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm (Psalm 33:9).
He is not Tame

To tame something is to train it to do what you want and to make it safe for humans to be around. No one teaches God or tells Him what to do.
Whatever the Lord pleases, He does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps. He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth, who makes lightnings for the rain and brings forth the wind from His storehouses (Isaiah 135:8-9).
Whom has measured the Spirit of the LORD, or what man shows Him his counsel? Whom did He consult, and who made Him understand? Who taught Him the path of justice, and taught Him knowledge, and showed Him the way of understanding? Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket, and are accounted as the dust on the scales; Isaiah 40:14-15
God is not our genie in a bottle ready to do what we want at our beck and call. He decides what happens according to what pleases Him. He is the judge and understands all things. His timing is perfect.

He is not Safe

Following Jesus will not give you more money, make you feel comfortable, make everyone like you, or take all of your problems away. It is more like skydiving. Unfortunately, most of us think we are skydiving when we jump out of a plane parked on the ground with a parachute on. Following Jesus will not be easy but He guarantees it is the best thing you will ever do.
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. (Matt 10:37-39)
If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it (Matt. 16:26)
Being willing to follow Jesus at the risk of losing your family is not safe, but that is one of the dangers of following Him. We need to be willing to give up everything to follow Him.

He is Good

Why would we follow a God that is not tame or safe? We follow Him because He is good.
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him (John 3:16-17).
There are many things that we don't understand about how God works, but knowing that He gave His only Son for us to be saved gives us unshakable confidence that we can put our trust in Him no matter what the circumstances, even if it means giving up our family or trusting that His way is the best.

He is the King
At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Phil. 2:10).
Every single person who has ever existed will bow the knee to Jesus. He is not tame, He is not safe, but He is God. He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. He is the greatest!
