Should Sunday be a day of rest?

And the LORD said to Moses, "You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, 'Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the LORD, sanctify you.'" Exodus 31:12 - 13 During a recent study through the book of Exodus these verses caught my attention. The question that came to mind was, "above what?" The purpose of this study was to examine the social control hypotheses that "human sacrifice legitimizes political authority and social class systems, functioning to stabilize such social stratification." Human sacrifice as defined by this study is the "deliberate and ritualized killing of an individual in order to please or placate supernatural beings."
The findings of this study illuminates the darkness that we live in. Although the study would like to lay the blame for human sacrifice on religion, they do not provide any evidence for it since all the cultures they studied were religious. They assume that the reason for human sacrifice is to please a supernatural being instead of simply pleasing ourselves. Science cannot examine the heart. However, let's compare the findings of the study with our current secular West…
