Praying for a Sign

"He's an atheist now?" I exclaimed, "What happened?" He really wanted a girlfriend but could not find one, so he prayed for a sign that God loved him. The sign he was looking for never came.

What sign would have convinced him? A million dollars, tax free, in the bank, or perhaps a new promotion at work? Or, was there really only one sign he was looking for? The answer seems obvious enough, and his "prayer" a bit disingenuous. He wasn't really praying at all, he was giving God an ultimatum.

God is no one's fool. What more can God do to show that He loves the world, than give His only Son? Those who refuse that sign, will not receive another one.

"Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you." But He answered them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth (Matt. 12:40-41).
